Office Report Card: BKWLD

bkwld.jpgBKWLD is a a wonderful design and development company with offices in Seattle and Sacramento. I had the chance to get some exclusive sneak peak shots because one of my buddies works there. If you aren’t familiar with BKWLD yet, you will be soon because it’s without a doubt that within the next couple of years they’ll be known nationwide. With an impressive client list (Shakira, Backstreet Boys, E-40, Microsoft, etc.) that rivals the likes of 2 Advanced and Fantasy Interactive, BKWLD has the experience and staff to become one of the greatest. But do they have the offices to prove it? Let’s take a look behind the scenes of BKWLD!

Exterior Look:

Weren’t too many exterior shots, but from the look of it, it seems like it’s a nice brick building with some decent landscaping. I can’t give it a solid grade though without seeing some real outside shots. N/A

Interior Look:

The interior look of BKWLD is awesome. I love the reception area with the overhead logo along with the brick and wood flooring and decor. The wooden rafters really give it a cozy feel, and the spot lighting gives the room a warmer look. I’m under the impression that they have just moved in recently to their offices as the place still looks pretty empty. But it’s got real potential and once they start hanging up some pictures and decorating, I’ve no doubt that this place will definitely start to shine. I’m going to check back with BKWLD after a couple months to do another follow up report card to see how much they’ve taken advantage of their great venue. But I’ve got to grade it in its current condition.

Grade: B-

Employees:

From the pictures, the employees at BKWLD seem to be very enthusiastic and social. They don’t look corporate at all. My good friend Garrett is working for them and was able to snatch a nice cameo of SNTNCS on the computer screen. That right there should get them an automatic A (as you can tell, Office Report Card is more about seeing the pictures, then it is getting the grade).

Grade: A

Environment:

Nice looking Macs, nice deep red brick walls, some delicious Starbucks, and a cool looking logo in the foyer. What more could you ask for? The environment of BKWLD looks to be a creative one an deviates from the traditional studio look. It’s got a kitchen! Come on now. I’d love to grill some some cheese sandwiches in between breaks.

Grade: A

Furnishings:

The furnishings look a bit empty right now. But they do have a nice plasma TV so that’s a start. At the moment, I know the office is pretty new so there aren’t too many furnishings, but hopefully when I check up on BKWLD again in a few months they’ll have gotten a furniture face lift. But hey…they got Macs.

Grade: C

Overall: B+

I’d love to work here. Great looking environment, friendly looking employees, and of course my buddy Garrett. Thanks BKWLD!

Office Report Card: Threadless.com

Threadless is home to one of the youngest millionaires. And with good reason. Threadless is quickly growing in popularity and people are becoming aware of the brand. I’ve been a fan of Threadless for about two years now (gosh, has it really been that long?) and I own probably about 10 - 12 Threadless T’s (I love those $10 dollar sales). With that said, I’m sure many of you reading this have heard, or own a piece of Threadless. I’ve always been curious to see what it’s like over at SkinnyCorp, and how someone under the age of 30 would run a multi-million dollar business. Turns out, I wouldn’t be disappointed as Threadless has one of the coolest offices I’ve seen.

Exterior Look:

I did some searching for Threadless’s main office building’s exterior but couldn’t find any shots. I found plenty of shots of their retail store in Chicago, but that doesn’t count. I won’t count this against Threadless. N/A (lack of real exterior shots)

Interior Look:

Uhm, can I get a job please? Threadless has one of the coolest offices I’ve ever seen. It’s as cozy as 50 foot ceilings and brick walls and hard tile floors can get. There’s a recreational area that has a ping pong table, large television, arcade cabinents, bean bags…it’s like working at home. There is still lots of empty space though, and I feel as though it could potentially be utilized better. I’m not sure how, but at the end of it, it still feels like you’re in a big warehouse.

But that’s not what I’m really eying. I’m talking about “The Pod”, the coolest personal office I’ve seen in a long time. The pod is built inside of an Airstream Trailer (correct me if I’m wrong) and is modified on the inside. The result is probably the nicest, coziest working spaces you can have. I could talk about how cool Threadless looks for hours, but I’ll just let the pictures do the talking. A-

Employees:

Employees? Threadless has employees? I thought it had to be work to be an employee? It’s more like Threadless has friends who have fun every day and … oops, a $50 million bucks ends up in the bank at the end of the year. Everyone looks extremely happy. And no wonder why. What’s cooler then having a 20-something CEO who makes tons of money, loves his staff, and has a passion for art? There’s parties, social gatherings, live bands, neon lights, ping pong tables, Macs…blah blah blah. A+

Environment:

The environment is what makes Threadless what it is. I wouldn’t expect an office that looked any different then the one they have. After all, the company breathes art, and depends on it. Throughout the entire office, you’ll see Threadless schwag, wall art, and young employees that give Threadless that “fun-to-work” feel. Even though you still have concrete pillars, rafters, and an industrial flooring. A

Furnishings:

Let’s see…I’ve got a ping pong table, a pool table…a bunch of love seats, couches, and lazy-boys…oh yea, a 50′ television…some nice Apple computers. Wait, where’s the teleporter and Segway? hah. Threadless makes a conscious effort to make work feel fun and cozy, something I think they’ve accomplished easily. A+

Overall:

Threadless. Oh how I love your company. You’re an inspiration to entrepreneurs, designers, and young aspiring individuals throughout the world. You’ve got one of the coolest offices that any employee could ask for, and you deliver the best products. Furthermore, you continue to grow and prosper. You’re employees love their jobs and your execs are human. It’s without a doubt that I reward Threadless with an A+. I would’ve expected nothing less.

Overall: A+

Office Report Card: Bebo.com

Office Report Card is a new feature on Sentences.org. Basically, it is a “surprise” look at popular web companies and their offices and rates them on several different categories: Exterior Look, Interior Look, Employees, Environment, Furnishing. Pictures are found from scavenging the web. Anything made public is game. This week, I took a look at Bebo.com recently opened their entire platform to developers, a move which mimics their biggest rival, Facebook. I think this is a step in the right direction for them. The best chance they have against Facebook is if they found a way to control the amount of spamming that Facebook’s current application system works (ugh, I hate getting ZOMBIE BITES invitations!).

Please note that Bebo’s office is new, and while I should have been a little more sensitive to this, I decided to just go ahead and grade it on its look now, and make amends after they’ve had some time to settle in. I love ya Bebo!

Exterior Look:

There aren’t any pictures of the exterior really, so I can only assume that it’s a brick warehouse / studio apartment type of feel. Personally, this urban fit really appeals to me as it gives a young, hip, and independent company. It gives Bebo a professional feel, while being interesting and modern. C+ (lack of real exterior shots)

Interior Look:

The inside of Bebo lacks the furnishings to really match the exterior feel. I’d assume there would be a nice “apartment” feel to it, but it feels pretty corporate inside. Though I love the orange sitting room, the walls are naked and bare and lack some contrast. The office area seems spacious and nice, and feels as if you’re working at home. It doesn’t feel too corporate and the exterior of the building really help as it is hows on the inside as well. Nice windows. C+

Employees:

The Employees page on Bebo.com reveals a very enthusiastic and fun looking crowd. They are all smiling, and seem to be having lots of fun. The team is young and definitely look bright and intelligent. The environment (though bare and boring), may actually be working for them. Furthermore, they list small biographies of all their staff along with interesting nicknames. I like a company that is laid back and professional. A+

Environment:

There weren’t too many pictures of the environment, but there was pretty cool video posted on Bebo backstage, a nice little area found on the Bebo site (I really like how you can get somewhat personal with the staff. Unlike Facebook where I have no idea who is who and why I should trust them with so much of my information…). Though the employees all seem cool, the environment seems pretty bare bones. I know that they recently moved in, but with the way it is now, it feels way too much like an office job :(. C+

Furnishings:

Bebo’s offices seem like your run of the mill office space with a small twist of that good ole’ home feeling. There are no walls or cubicles and I can tell that the employees love to socialize and have fun. The sitting area looks a bit cheesy and seems like your typical Ikea furnishings, but I guess you can’t go wrong with that. The desks all seem to be pretty naked as well with no picture frames or toys :(. C+

Overall:

Hey Bebo, I know you guys just moved in so I’m going to cut you some slack. I love your company and I think you have a real shot at taking down the social networking giants. Your team seems to get along well, and with that kind of chemistry floating around, I can only assume that productivity levels are high and motivation is well meaning your service will only improve itself. Congrats!
